Complete Cosmetic Care
We believe that the key to healthy skin is good self-care and wellness, and that cosmetic treatments are supplemental to helping you present your best self. We encourage a balanced lifestyle, including sun protection and proper skin care. Personalized cosmetic treatments can then add another dimension to your treatment plan.
Injectables and Fillers
Botox Cosmetic is a solution that is injected to temporarily improve fine lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions. During the procedure, small amounts of Botox are injected into the skin to stop the underlying muscles from moving, resulting in relaxation of the affected area and smoothing of the skin. Botox is indicated for individuals who wish to soften and reduce existing lines that contribute to a tired look, and to prevent fine lines and wrinkles and maintain a smooth youthful look. Concerns that can be treated include the following:
Frown lines between the eyebrows (the 11’s)
Bunny lines of the nose
Vertical lip lines around the mouth
Excessive down-turning of the corners of the mouth
Platysmal bands of the neck
Excess flaring of the nostrils
Treatments are quick, requiring only 10-15 minutes, with minimal downtime. Results can last for 3-6 months, depending upon the area treated.
Botox injections can also be used to treat excess sweating and clenching of the teeth at night.
To lift and contour cheeks for a more youthful look
To fill and soften parentheses lines and marionette lines around the mouth
To lift and soften corner lines at the edges of the mouth
To plump and enhance lips
To soften vertical lines around the lips
During the treatment, a small needle is used to inject the gel into the desired areas. Topical numbing cream and ice packs are available to maximize comfort. Mild swelling, redness and discomfort may occur following the procedure, though should resolve quickly. Results can last for 6-12 months or longer.
Kybella is an injection that provides non-surgical removal of unwanted fat under the chin, called submental fullness or a “double chin”. Kybella is composed of a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a chemical that permanently removes fat cells. The treatment consists of multiple small injections into the area of unwanted fat. The procedure is repeated every 4 weeks, for an average of 2-3 sessions. Mild swelling, bruising, and numbness may occur in the treated area following the injections, though resolve over days to weeks.
Excess sweating can be caused by many processes, including infection, hormone imbalances or autoimmune diseases. Excess sweating can also be normal, in particular heavy sweating of the armpits, hands and feet. In these cases, Botox Cosmetic is an effective treatment for hyperhidrosis. The most commonly treated areas include armpits and hands. During the procedure, small injections of Botox are administered throughout the areas of excess sweating. Ice and topical numbing can be used to maximize comfort during the procedure. There is no downtime, and results may be seen as soon as 3 days and can last up to 6-9 months.
As only actively growing hair is affected, multiple sessions are required. On average, 6 sessions are recommended for optimal results, scheduled every 2-6 weeks depending upon the body area treated.
Patients may experience mild swelling, redness and irritation in the treatment area for a few days following the treatment.
Our laser can effectively treat all skin colors, and nearly all hair colors. If you are interested in laser hair removal, an evaluation and consultation with a provider at Arboretum Dermatology is recommended to determine the best treatment for you.
The LaseMD laser treatment brightens skin tone and restores a more youthful texture. This resurfacing treatment uses non-ablative, fractional laser energy delivered via many tiny beams to create micro-channels in the skin. The micro-channels stimulate production of new collagen and elastin and improve the overall health and quality of the skin at a cellular level. The LaseMD may be used on the face, neck, chest, back, arms and hands for the following:
To brighten and refresh the skin
To reverse signs of sun damage
To soften fine lines and wrinkles
To prevent age related changes of the skin
To minimize scars
To help fade melasma
The treatment is FDA-approved for reduction of actinic keratoses (precancerous growths caused by the sun).
At the time of the treatment, a numbing cream and cool air are used to maximize comfort. Once complete, targeted serums or PRP may be applied to boost benefits and speed healing, as the porous nature of the laser treated skin allows maximum absorption and delivery of topical medications. Patients may experience redness and warmth in the treated area for several hours. Mild swelling resolves over several days, and a fine dryness of the skin may occur after 3-4 days. Continued improvement in texture and tone is seen over a period of months.
For optimal results, a series of three treatments, 4 weeks apart is recommended, and single treatments may be repeated every 6-12 months for continued improvement and maintenance.
For additional rejuvenation treatments, please see the Carbon Peel, Microneedling and Chemical Peels
During the procedure, carbon is applied to the complexion to attract the laser’s energy. The laser light is then passed over the treatment area, creating warmth and increasing blood flow. The laser light is then used to remove the carbon layer, exfoliating the skin and unclogging and refining pores. Immediately following treatment, the skin has a light glow. No special post-treatment skin care or precautions are necessary.
When performed as a series, the Carbon Peel is also effective for treatment of acne and tightening and toning of the skin.
The Lutronic Clarity (Long Pulsed Alexandrite and Nd:YAG) laser uses light to selectively target and destroy unwanted blood vessels. without damaging the surrounding skin. The treatment is effective at minimizing multiple forms of unwanted redness including the following:
Broken blood vessels
Venous lake of the lip
Port wine stains
Patients may experience redness, swelling and bruising for 1-3 days following the treatment. The laser can treat all skin types. Depending upon the condition, 1-3 treatments performed every 4-6 weeks may be necessary for optimal results.
The Lutronic Clarity, a long pulsed alexandrite and Nd:YAG laser, and the Lutronic Spectra, a dual-pulsed Q-switched Nd: YAG laser, are effective for removal of unwanted brown spots or growths in the skin. The devices use laser light to selectively remove pigment, without damaging the surrounding skin. The lasers are effective at removing many types of pigmented lesions, including the following:
Café au lait macules
Following the procedure, patients may experience transient darkening and drying of the spots as they heal. The lesions will naturally resolve over 1-6 weeks, depending upon body area treated.
The Lutronic Spectra dual-pulsed Q-switched Nd: YAG laser is effective at removing tattoos of all colors. The laser uses light energy to break down the pigment of an unwanted tattoo, allowing the body to slowly clear away the color. The treatment can be used to completely remove an unwanted tattoo or to fade certain areas of a tattoo to allow modifications.
During the treatment, a topical numbing cream is used to maximize comfort. Patients may experience frosting of the skin, redness, swelling and occasionally blistering following the procedure. Icing the area afterwards is helpful. Symptoms may last for up to one week.
Multiple treatments scheduled every few months are required for complete removal.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive collagen induction treatment that uses a microarray of fine-tipped needles to create tiny channels in the skin. This process stimulates the body’s healing mechanisms to build new collagen in the deeper layers of the skin and stimulate regeneration of the upper layers of the skin. The treatment is effective at improving a wide range of concerns:
Fading and smoothing of acne scars
Minimizing fine lines and wrinkles
Tightening of enlarged pores size
Brightening of overall texture
Lightening of melasma
Following treatment, the small perforations in the skin allow maximal absorption of therapeutic serums or PRP (hyperlink). Downtime is minimal with mild redness that resolves quickly.
A series of three treatments, schedule monthly, is recommended for optimal results.
PRP is a therapy that utilizes platelets and proteins in the patient’s own blood to stimulate rejuvenation and speed healing. During the procedure, blood is drawn from the patient and then processed in the clinic to isolate the platelet rich plasma. This serum is then applied to laser treated or microneedled skin, or directly injected into the skin.
PRP may be used for the following:
Hair growth on the scalp
PRP is used in combination with laser and microneedling treatments to maximize results, and as an independent therapy on its own. For optimal results a series of treatments is recommended.
Chemical peels are treatments applied to the skin in office to treat conditions such as acne or hyperpigmentation, or for general skin rejuvenation. The peels gently exfoliate the outer layer of skin and stimulate new skin growth. Benefits of chemical peels include:
Diminished signs of aging
A brighter complexion
For best results a series of 3-6 treatments are generally recommended.
Dermaplaning is a manual technique that removes facial hair and dead skin. During the procedure, a small surgical blade is gently passed over the skin repeatedly, exfoliating the surface. The process is painless and results are immediate. Benefits of dermaplaning include:
A smooth complexion
Removal of vellus hairs (“peach fuzz”)
Improved absorption of topical products
Priming of the skin for a chemical peel
A healthier, more radiant appearance
Sclerotherapy is a treatment to minimize or remove unwanted spider veins on the legs.
During the treatment, a series of small injections are performed into the unwanted blood vessels. The injected solution creates inflammation inside the blood vessels, stimulating the vessels to close and allowing the body to absorb and remove them. Compression stockings are recommended for 3 days following the procedure, and sun protection of the treated area is encouraged for up to 6 weeks. For optimal results, a series of 2-3 sessions, approximately 2-3 months apart, may be recommended.
Removal of benign skin growths (skin tags, seborrheic keratoses, cherry angiomas, milia)
Small normal skin growths appear commonly and can occur anywhere on the body. Skin tags, seborrheic keratoses, cherry angiomas, and milia are not harmful, but may be unwanted due to appearance or annoyance. Liquid nitrogen, snipping, electrocautery, and laser are all examples of effective techniques for removal. Lesions appear progressively over time and often require periodic removal to remain clear.
If you are interested in removal of these benign growths, please schedule a consultation with one of our providers to determine the best treatment options.
Melasma is a muddy brown blotchy discoloration of the face triggered by pregnancy, hormones or simply sun damage. It can be difficult to treat and often is recurrent with additional sun exposure. Treatment of melasma requires a multifaceted approach including many of the following:
Removal of triggers if possible
Effective sun protection
Bleaching or lightening medications
If you suffer from melasma and are interested in treatment, please schedule a consultation with one of our providers for more information and recommendations.
Hair loss can result from many underlying conditions including iron deficiency, thyroid disease, medications, autoimmune disease, stress, or simply age (androgenetic alopecia). Treatment of hairloss should always begin with a medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause. Once identified, targeted treatments to bring back lost hair, and maintain current hair can be correctly prescribed. Treatment options include the following:
Injections including corticosteroids or PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma).
Treatments are often combined to achieve maximum results.
If you suffer from hair loss and would like to determine the cause and consider a treatment regiment, please schedule a consultation with one of our providers.
Keloids, a form of scar that may form after an injury or grow spontaneously, can be cosmetically unacceptable, and may itch or be painful. Treatment with injections or lasers can help minimize the bulk of the scar and resolve the associated symptoms. Repeated treatments are often required for ongoing control.
Acne can result in scarring including discoloration, redness, pockmarks or keloids. Once active acne has been controlled, scarring can be improved and smoothed with targeted therapies. Treatment options include lasers and chemical peels to fade red and brown marks, resurfacing lasers to smooth texture, and microneedling to build new collage and smooth out pockmarks. For best results, a series of 3-6 treatments is recommended.
A consultation is recommended for evaluation and personalized treatment options for scarring.
